Seriously, the best orchestra in the world is the one that played the best last night. Also seriously - I don't go for this stuff, because I've heard performances by the world's supposed second tier orchestras (Pittsburgh; S.F.; L.A.; St. Louis; Cincinnati; Cologne Radio Orchestra; Finnish Radio Orchestra; and on and on and on) that were every bit as great as performances I've heard from the world's big name orchestras. Actually, I recently heard a Mahler 9th from the Saito Kinen Orchestra (from Japan) that was pretty awesome. Vic Firth was playing tympani for them. Ozawa conducted.
