"Bariphonia"! I like it.

What you say is certainly true for my old Reynolds. It is marginally playable with a 6 1/2 AL, and hopelessly flat with a Schilke 51 (not D). The leadpipe is part of the problem, being a replacement that is too long. That horn was probably supplied with something like a 12C, and the 6 1/2 AL was on the big end of the spectrum, I suspect, in 1937.

The Besson G70 is the mouthpiece that was supplied with the Besson Imperial is no bigger than a 6 1/2 AL, but is has an enormously long shank. With that mouthpiece, and with some restriction of air movement, I can play the horn in tune with all the slides in. Either Besson didn't tune their instruments with the same mouthpiece they supplied, or their tuner was a trumpet player, or they were designed to be played with all slide all the way in. Bah!
