Another conductor who I would trust on this piece is Maxim Shostakovich. While I don't think much of his conducting in other works, he did come once and conduct the FPO in a performance of the 5th. We had been playing it in the "triumphant" style and completely missing the underlying sarcasm and tragedy. After the first read through of the piece, Maxim took a few minutes and explained what his father had told him of the work. It really made so much more sense that way and we happily switched our interpretation concepts. Sadly, we haven't played the piece since. I don't know if Maxim has recorded this work with an orchestra but if he has, it might be pretty good. I found his interpretation of the work very effective.

My opinion for what it's worth...
