Gershwin was heavily influenced by the Cornet Playing of Bix Beiderbecke, but chose the trumpet because he felt it would carry better within the context of the larger group and over the primitive mikes of the early radio days. I have heard it told by a couple of old guys in VA. that the slow solo(trumpet) was an attempt to portray a Black Blues singer and the faster solo was to have a more latin feel. What a 1920's Latin feel was, I couldn't tell you. In looking at the score, if the trumpet player plays the part with the written affections, it has a mild swing. The worst thing a conductor can do is OVERDO the written intentions. READ THE INK,IT DOESN"T LIE!!!!
