Hey Joe,
We have one in our section in concert band and I've played it a few times. I noticed the woofyness of the sound with a funnle type mouthpiece but it can be cleared up with practice or switch to a cup style mouthpiece. It is a great contra bass horn for band, large wind ensemble and Orchestra. It is a big horn to hold for me and I am 5'6". On this particular horn the need to use slides to help intonation was a must. My college proffesor used alot of Cerveny horns and he would always say some come out of the factory as Tubas and some come out as garage doors. If you can get some one to check it out as well as doing a long play test before you decide to the marry the thing, that would be way to go. Sometimes for better or worse a Tuba is a Tuba and you may have to live with it a while before you come to an understanding. On the whole I would say that Cerveny horns are good for the low cost. Hope this helps.
