Both Tom and Tony are correct in their posts, the only physical difference is the bottom bow and bell section get larger faster on the 188 which gives it a larger, warmer, more open sound. I also noticed when I play tested them (new ones that is)that the intonation on the 188 was much better as well. I don't know if that is true with older ones or not. I have a 188 and I love it, I wouldn't really call it a 5/4 it is just a little bit large 4/4. But that is just my opinion.
