If your performance is indoors, I would think that a big bass drum (or two) with extra tight heads and hard beaters would do the trick. (Be sure to get a couple of hairy Neanderthal percussionists for the job.)

This thread reminds me of an article in TIME magazine about 50 years ago. The story was supposed to be true. The Cleveland Orchestra was playing 1812, and some wag(s) arranged to drop a duck and feathers from the auditorium ceiling when the cannon sounds went off. (Must have been a, er, "fowl" performance.)
