If you just want to play around with mouthpieces, the little Sherline lathe is nicely made, if small. The shorter-bed version is probably fine for mouthpiece work, and I would suggest buying the threading attachment so you can make tooling to fit directly on the spindle (not to mention, making screw-rims). You can get CNC setups with the lathes, or they can be retrofitted later.
If you are thinking about production work, try to find a nice 12-14" South Bend or Logan lathe; maybe a turret lathe.
