My B&S has plastic (which are actually nylon, I would hope no tuba has plastic) valve guides and they work great. My guess is that when you oil the valves, you swirl the valve around on the guide or let it drop onto the top before aligning it. When you bang the bottom of your guide, it eventually fans out or leaves a little fleck of "plastic" sticking out. And guess what... YOUR VALVES STOP WORKING.

As for the springs, if you put your valves in while your tuba is on its side, they can easily get bent. If the springs aren't strong enough in the first place, well that's a whole 'nother problem.

The only MW's I've played have been rotary, and they worked fine (at least, as well as can be expected of a rotary valve ;).
