Well I'm not too sure Walter Piston knows what he's talking about being that the BBb tuba was the dominant big tuba of Wagner's time, although the most commonly used tuba was the bass tuba and not a contrabass. Also, Wagner invented his own tuba, hence the title "Wagner" tuba, as he had the idea for the instrument so as to produce a sound that would be some where between the conical sounds of the horn and tuba. He built two sizes of these instruments: a tenor in Bb and a bass in F. So I find it hard to believe that Wagner perfered the CC over a BBb when the commonly used tuba in Germany was BBb, and when he attempted to produce a horn/tuba sound by making a new instrument which he taylored to be pitched in both Bb and F.
