Finale Notepad is available for download free also. You get the full version, not some kind of a demo. It does all the basics and will save and print your music. It is available for mac and windows. I'm not really up to speed with all of the MIDI stuff, but Finale Notepad will play back the music you have written on a computer version of the instrument the music is intended for. http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/ is where you can download it along with tons of other music software packages.

Even if you are not interested in a Finale product, the website is worth looking at...lots of music software available.
