I don't get it either. I was expecting an on/off switch like you mentioned, and maybe some sort of dial to adjust the strength. It's just a magnet, mostly covered in rubber, with felt on the end you rub on the dent to protect the finish of the tuba. I'm sure the magnet is high quality and expensive, as are the 4 different sized dent balls..... but I agree the price seems excessive.
But, like I said, it gets the job done.
