Yeah, I did the same thing with a 6100 gauss rare earth magnet, using some plated carbon steel ball bearings my dad had in his shop. Worked pretty well, although I suspect that in the hands of a qualified instrument repair tech, it would've been more effective.
I agree that the inventor deserves to be compensated for his idea, but even if his profit margin at $800 is *zero*, it's still a big ticket item. No one's gonna go into the dent removal business with $25 worth of magnets and some ball bearings, though...
