"hammering" on any instrument makes me cringe....even if it is a miraphone ;) I would take the valves out and give them a good cleaning. Then clean the rotor housing out too...it is possible that the noise is comming from the grinding of small bits of dust, food, gum, enamel(broke a tooth off during an all-state audition), anything else that goes into a horn. Clean it up and oil it good and you might hear a whole new world. Also the rubber stop pegs on your rotor keys might need replaced. Check it out...
