I teach my students to tongue with the tip of the tongue hitting the area behind the upper teeth where the upper teeth and gum meet. I never tongue between the lips because I believe this interferes with the airstream. I'm sure some can tongue this way but not me. As far as syllables, I teach "THOH". That's "OH" with an "H" in front of it, with a "T" in front of that. This leaves the oral cavity and throat open, facilitates quick breathing, and offers a round sound. Of course, the trick is to carry those attributes into the upper range where players will typically tighten up. With practice it does work.
