I'm going to say this with the utmost respect intended, but I'm going to say it anyway:

If you need to ask us on this board whether it is okay to hammer on your tuba with a dowel, then you are not qualified to do this yourself. Please, please, please take your tuba to a qualified repair technician and have him do the work. He will know what to hammer and how hard, or even more likely he will know which special swaging pliers to pull out of the drawer to shrink up the bearings a bit before lapping the rotor shafts back into them.

As they say in car racing: Don't race your ride. Do not work on your main tuba without the confidence that only proper training can bring.
