That's true enough - but backwards, I think.

Theory says it's all about the tapers (and the tweaking). But, the details of the tapers are damned hard to reverse-engineer (assuming they were "engineered" in the first place).

When people classify things, they start from the easily observable parts. "Bore" (as measured at the 2nd valve) is easy to observe. It's probably a very good indication of some aspects of the sound, if you keep everything else constant! But, of course, everything else is *not* constant.

The 2nd valve is easy to find, on any tuba - but it's not in the same *place* on every tuba. If you measure at the 2nd valve on two tubas, one with a very short leadpipe and one with a very long leadpipe, you are comparing apples and pomegranites.
