In the early 1950s, the Chicago Symphony Brass Quintet began a three year relationship with the Holton company. The company organized a tour for the quintet, in exchange the quintet had to perform on Holton Brand instruments. At that time Holton only made a BBb tuba and not a CC. To correct the problem, Mr. Jacobs lent Mr. Arnold Westphal of Holton his York tuba for three weeks. But, Holton did not have the proper mandrels to make a CC tuba so, the ended with what was a modified BBb aka the CC 6/4 Holton we know and love today. All this information can be found in a must have book by Brian Frederiksen known as Arnold Jacobs: Song and Wind. Hope this helps.
