Lately, I've been using the synthetic "cork" used on budget wines. The stuff varies widely in terms of suitability, but my best results have been with the bright purple or yellow corks (Bridgeview Oregon wines are a good source). I use a straight plug cutter (meant for cutting wooden plugs) in my drill press. The result is exactly the right combination of low noise and little bounce. Using a larger cutter, I've also had good results using these as corks for Conn short-stroke piston valves.

...and the wine's not bad either.

Cheers!
Chuck
