Jerry's argument reminds me of the folks who argue that big time college athletes should be paid, considering all of the income that they generate for their institutions. They are being paid...by not having to pay for tuition, room, board, books, etc. Not too mention the "tutoring" (see University of Minnesota Basketball) and extra benefits that they receive.

Free education is not an entitlement, whether you can dunk a basketball, have an IQ of 7,004, or can play Carnival of Venice at 212. If you break down the hourly rate of the stipend with most music asssitantships, I'm guessing that most grad assistants are getting a pretty good deal. I know mine sure is.
