Here is an idea:
Pay attention to the angle from which you (the listener) hear the prettiest sound coming from the bell of a tuba. (You might get a friend to play for you.)
Based on your observations, you might place the microphone at the same relationship to the angle of YOUR tuba bell, when you are recording yourself playing.
