My capacity is not outstanding. I think swimming underwater a lot when I was a kid may have helped some to develop what little potential I did have. Another thing to consider is playing long phrases or tones softly, going for maximum duration rather than sound level. That helps develop efficient use of air. Also work on developing a really light staccatto. There is a fairly long triplet passage in "Judas Maccabeus" (Beethoven-Bell) that can be done in one breath only if you use the air efficiently. It's a great milestone for a kid to work toward. Finally, work on sneaking little breaths into four-beat Rich Matteson-style bass lines without interrupting the flow. That's what works for me.
