Whiting is nothing more or less than finely powdered chalk. It used to be used in toothpaste as the primary cleaning agent, along with a soap. It's quite soft and not terribly abrasive.
I've got an old (1940) shop book that recommends alcohol and lampblack applied with cotton wool to achieve the same "no-scratch" purpose, but I couldn't imagine a messier combination. But applying whiting and alcohol with cotton wool might be an option...
