It depends on your viewpoint. Neither ophis nor kleidos (sorry, the BBS doesn't seem to display the Greek alphabet) are present in any other form in French; Jean Hilaire Asté simply took two Greek words and slammed them together. A German inventor could have just as easily done the same and come up with the same word. Still wouldn't make it a German word, in my view. Now, if it had been called "clef de serpent" or somesuch, I'd agree on its pedigree being French.
