All good suggestions, esp the one about contacting a local University w/ good music dept. What does your instructor say about brands? Does he have any contacts? If all else fails, I strongly suggest you consider Dillon Music and talk to Matt. I just bought my son (a HS soph) a used BBb Miraphone from them and they did me right. Do NOT even consider the infamous St. Petersburg from Tuba Express.
