I was blessed by going to school at Western Kentucky University for my undergrad, where during the 4 years, I got to play the school's amazing kaiser Cerveny, a nice Mirafone 186, a fine Rudolf Meinl 4/4, a great Holton 345 CC, a good Meinl Weston model 32 CC, and finally a 2-yr.-old Hirsbrunner HB-2 CC. All the aforementioned were school-owned instruments! Then, with that experience on different horns, I went shopping at a major convention (Mid-West, Chicago), and bought my first horn, a Rudolf Meinl 3/4 CC. By that time, I knew what I was looking for, and how much it should cost. If you want an excellent, pragmatic tuba teacher, and would like to get some experience before paying a lot of dollars for a horn, contact Professor Joe Stites at Western Kentucky University (WKU online), and see if he can take on another student this fall.
