I bought a "Strongboy" wrench which is meant to open lids to jars. There's a link below to see this device. It's like a strap wrench with a steel band but has a rubber wedge near the handle. Requires very little room to get the cap loose.
If I remember right, it cost between $12 and $15 from "Tabletools.com".
