I pulled this one off last year when i was the ONLY tuba in my band, and the trick is

1) the bars before the melody (F C F C F...) breathing wont be a problem because you will have the t-bones palying the same part and maybe a bass bone as well. To get the full tuba sound in the melody, amke note of which notes are short. Plays them as such and breath in those spots.

I know its marked tied there but listen to every recording of this piece. Everyone cuts those notes short, ans it is more characteristic to do so anyway. Breath in these spots and it will make your articulation and interpretation match everyone else.
