A friend of mine just got a new King 2341. I had a chance to play it tonight. Great sound! And with the shorter height the balance is much improved and the horn is lighter than earlier versions.. Construction was sturdy and solid. King tubas have a reputation for playing in tune but this horn was even better than my (modified) 1241 - “d” in the staff was right on the mark using the open fingering which tends to be FLAT. The upper register above the staff up to Bb was more responsive and free than before. The pedal register, however, still seemed a little stuffy to me, but was improved. My PERSONAL opinion is that if the 4th valve had a larger bore, it might eliminate the stuffiness in the low end and make it an even better tuba. However, for the budget minded, it would be difficult to find a better choice in a 4/4 tuba.
My .001¢, for what it’s worth (with apologies to Jay).
