First I would check to make sure that there is nothing stuck in the horn. Make sure that it is not leaking anywhere like on the ferrules (joints). You can try a water test. Check the rotor alignment, the rotor stoppers might be worn and out of alignment. If you take the back cap off of the rotors you will see hash marks that will need to line up with the valve open and then closed. With the age of the horn, as you say, I would be willing to bet it has a leak. Find a good repairman to check it out. There is no reason for an old mirofone to play bad. Archie
