Even in the amateur horn world, where I spend my time, it's at least as important how easy you are to get along with as it is how you play. If our section has an opening, and we already know someone who has the needed skills AND is a good fit in the group, we're very unlikely to go over hill and dale looking for a different person. Why would we? It's unfortunate for the ones who are never invited, but it works for the section. This is very much the way it works in the business world too; it's not who is "best" but who is the "best fit" of the people who are familiar to us, or about whom we can ask questions and get answers that we have confidence in.
