You've really hit the nail on the head. Efficient buzz and back off the air speed works very well. Perhaps it's a different matter on the 4/4s, but I doubt it. I practice keeping my lips buzzing free(no mouthpiece or rim). I can keep a buzz going for about 50 seconds. Try it out. It's a great test of efficient air use and control too.
