As a euphoniumist, I would really like the chance to perform this, especially since we are often asked to prepare it as an audition excerpt. I believe though that if it's going to be performed on euph, it should sound dark, full, and strong. I played this excerpt for an orchestral conductor in a masterclass, and his comments were dead on: "Sounds beautiful and easy, that's the problem...It doesn't make me picture a large ox pulling a heavy cart." I think the key to playing it on euph is to use large equipment with great air control. As for using a contrabass, just because it can be done doesn't mean it should be done, in my opinion.
