I believe that different people learn in different ways.

Being a jerk, I'm not one who needs a teacher to run their mouth a lot - nor to encourage me to work harder. All I would look for is an amazing talent so that I could knock on their wood once a week and say to them, "Play this for me."..."Now play this."..."Now play this."...and LISTEN to their superb demonstrations.

I'd take care of my own business as far as busting my tail - provided the "not a great teacher / amazing player" just exposed me to the right stuff and provided a good model.

On the other hand, most (normal, well-adjusted) people need a teacher who can verbalize, analyze, organize, inspire, and encourage, besides being "good enough" models in their playing demonstration abilities.
