Michael,
I agree with you. When trying to evoke images of a singing Polish peasant on a crude oxcart slogging through the mud, powerful Pesante is in order for the movement. When I first performed this, I had no euphonium and the trombonists did not want to touch it. I had a Rudi 3/4 CC and a 5/4 CC. It seemed obvious that I'd use the 3/4 CC, but I found that I could not reliably, cleanly execute the upper parts on the 3/4 CC. As a lark, I decided to try it on the 5/4 CC in the practice room, and it WORKED! So, I played the entirety of Pictures on the 5/4 Rudi CC. To prospective Pictures players, I'd say don't discount the possibility of playing it on a larger instrument. A really good larger instrument might really surprise you.
