1. Do not put the mic(s) directly in line with the bell. I think you'll find that the off-axis sound is better. That's why J.P. Sousa invented raincatchers.

2. You don't necessarily need super good high-frequency response to record a tuba, but you do want a good low end. The $100 sony stereo mic (if it's the same model that I have) is a bit weak in that area. Try something like a pair of Shure dynamic vocal mics, any model over $50.

3. A big room of course is nice if you can get it, but the synthetic reverb in Cool Edit can be surprisingly helpful if you must use a dead room.
