I feel that in the true spirit of the cadenza, and with knowledge of the composer, one should take appropriate liberties. I just performed Eric Ewazen's Concerto with him in the audience, and he appreciated the 8va basso ending to the cadenza. I don't believe that John Williams would mind. It is too often that as artists, we stick to the page. No music happens on the paper. The composer's intent is indeed important, but so is your artistic voice. I believe that it would be agreeable to write your own cadenza for the right piece. I'm waiting for someone to alter appreciably the Vaughn Williams, or Gregson. Why, you ask? Well, we've already heard enough people alter the non-cadenza in the Hindemith and we keep on rolling along (and him in his grave, no doubt.) ;)
