Orch. Playing (Shorter or Longer Notes?)

Recently, at a low brass sectional directed by the trombone professor at my school, I was told to lengthen every note as much as possible when playing in an orchestra. This completely contradicts the advice given to me by Gene Pokorny, when he said to play everything as short and detached as possible to allow the hall to play the rest of the note for you. In my opinion, that advice makes more sense. When I asked the trombone professor if his comment applied to me, he said that it did. (We were playing Lohengrin at the time, if it matters)
So, in your opinion, who is correct?

Matt
