It seems to me that when a tubist arbitrarily drops the music down an octave, he/she usually does it for a similar reason to the trumpet player who chooses to play a passage/note an octave (or 2!) higher than written. (I always find it scary when I see any parallels between myself, and a trumpet player!) :-) Gratuitous displays of ego (no matter which end of the keyboard) are not pretty!
