The water key works without air behind it - but some air is necessary to get that last, pesky 5% of the water out - or at least that's the way it feels to me. Check back in a few months; perhaps my opinion will change.
Good thing it works, because the crook where the water key is located does not pull. It's in a somewhat strange-looking location, and just barely close enough or one-handed operation (both the valve and the key), so I simply assumed that the designers intended it that way. Alas, with my small hands it's a bit of a s t r e t c h.
It's really not that big a deal.
