This is true also for Joe Sellmansberger, who is a solid, pro-quality performer (yes, I've heard him play).
Matt Walters is a good non-professional tuba player, but I don't think he has any professional aspirations there.
My favorite repair tech in San Antonio was a former trumpet player for the Latin Brass, if I'm remembering the name of the group properly. He became a repair tech because he could no longer tolerate the life of a touring musician. By my observation, he could fairly competently play any of the instruments he repaired, including the woodwinds.
