Back in the 50's, there was an attempt to re-engineer harpsichord jack action, eliminating the "slop" in the jack guides. What was discovered was that the "slop" is what makes a jack really work--without it, you need some sort of escapement to prevent the quill from plucking on the way back down. The old guys had it right, it turns out.
