The main problem with "stock" St. Pete valves is the poor fit and finish from the factory. Usually, the back bearings don't fit correctly and if they are placed in their proper position they will bind. In some cases that I've seen, they aren't even close.

Before changing the linkage - I agree that is a problem - I would have a good repairman with some decent lathe skills refit (or fit for the first time) the stock rotary valves. After proper fitting and lapping they should spin like a top in the casing. If they don't, changing the linkage will have a minimal effect.

As far as St. Petes in general, if you like the sound and are careful to avoid damage, dropping a few coins in it to make the valves work well isn't a bad idea.
