muddiness has nothing to do with the style of the valve and everything to do with the player. some players sound better playing piston valves and some sound better playing rotary valves. maybe you (tubajake) sound better on pistons. I tend to sound better on rotaries. There are many tuba players who play on rotary valves and sound quite clear. I have also heard many players who play on pistons and sound pretty muddy. Oh, and the noise sometimes associated with rotary valves has everything to do with the linkage. If the linkage is well made, there is little or no noise. And, for me, I find a noisy rotary valve easier to fix than a noisy piston valve. If people lubricated their rotary linkage even half as often as is required to keep piston valves working, I think that their valves would be nice and quiet and the linkage would last significantly longer.
