There are some new "contest pieces designed to test an ensemble" that are also very musically satisfying. For example, the 2003 NABBA Championship Section test piece, "Montage" by Peter Graham, is an excellent piece of music. So is Philip Sparke's "Year of the Dragon." And on and on...
There are also "contest pieces designed to test an ensemble" that never go beyond that goal, as Rick states. They are for the band what Czerny études are for the piano.
