There is the original question. There are hundreds and hundreds of college tubists using BBb tubas. There is no need to push a more expensive tuba on someone who does not need it. Also no need to relearn fingerings when this person just wants to keep playing after high school while going to college.

Not everyone is shooting for the New York Phil. Some just want to play in band while working on a chemistry degree.
