The "long adapter" that you describe might be the kind with an impedance matching transformer. (If so it should say something like "high-Z" at one end and "low-Z" at the other.) There seems to be a popular belief that such adaptors somehow degrade the signal. I tested an inexpensive one once, using an audio generator and an oscilloscope, and was surprised to discover that its response was flat (perfect) from 20 Hz to well over 20 Khz. In other words, it was better at doing its job than any microphone you could buy. So if it does what you want it to do, then use it and don't worry.
