Admittedly, tone and volume are somewhat cloaked...but to me it's sort of like using a B.E.R.P.
If you get the best sound you can possibly get with the blasted earplugs in place (just like getting the best sound you can manage with a B.E.R.P.) when the earplugs come out it's always better than it was before the earplugs...
...and, of course, the articulation and pitch sensories (as you mentioned) are greatly enhanced.
