To sum up, the 2/3 5th valve gives the best intonation, averaged across the chormatic scale, of any 5 valve tuning system. Less distance must be pulled on the slides to approximate the tempered scale, than other tunings. This can be shown mathematically, although in actual playing many other factors affect intonation. It's too bad that the 2/3 5th has become somewhat unfashonable, as it worked quite well. There is a nice article by Rogor Bobo in the Brass Antholody from the Instrumentalist about his use of the 2/3 5th valve. A disadvantage for some players is that the fingerings are less intuitive.
