I must be missing something here. I don't understand the not having the budget or time to go to Woodwind and Brasswind to try tubas. I double checked the distance and according to yahoo maps the driving time between Minneaplopis and South Bend is only 8 hours. You can get up at 3 am, be to Woodwind and Brasswind by 11 am, try tubas for 3 hours, and be home at 1o pm. Total expense would only be gas of about $75, plus you save by not having to have the horn shipped. You don't have to worry about whether the horn will be damaged in shipping. Plus you don't have worry about having a huge box and packing material to get rid of. Plus you get to chose the tuba that is best for you.
